Islands in the Stream - Part 2: Sedona

The Chapel of the Holy Cross, Sedona Arizona.

We finish up this "series" on American cathedrals with a visit to the stunning Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona - where we discover a surprising connection to New York City.

Recorded on location in Sedona, (with a guest hello by Emil Shaker) and edited on an east-bound plane somewhere over the Pacific Ocean.

Islands in the Stream - Part 1: Manhattan

St. Patrick's and St. John the Divine: Modern American Cathedrals in the European Tradition

During a recent visit to New York I sought out a few modern urban sanctuaries: the Cathedrals of St.Patrick's and St. John the Divine on the island of Manhattan. I also try and find a different kind of "island in the stream" - searching for some stillness in the midst of a bustling JFK airport.

Recorded on location in NYC and edited on a west-bound plane somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Apologies: the sound for today's show is substandard.

The Ar-Rafai Mosque in Cairo

We return to Egypt to listen to a remarkable, heart-felt expression of love for the divine.

We revisit one of my favorite places, experiences and people:

"This is the first in a series of shows recorded on location throughout Egypt! Our guide and friend Emil Shaker takes us to meet the Imam of the Ar Rifai Mosque (also called the Mosque of the Snakes or the Mosque of the Healers). The Imam, a sufi master, takes us into the Royal Tombs (Khedive Ismail, King Farouk), turns off the lights and sings in Arabic. Amazing and moving."

Recorded live at the Mosque of the Healers in Cairo during our February 2007 pilgrimage.

The Bosnian Pyramid: Observations and Opinions

Here's what I think is going in Visoko with the Bosnian Pyramid.

In today's show I share the straight dope on the Bosnian Pyramid: I've been there, I've spoken to Samir Osmonagic, I've read just about everything written on the subject (on both sides of the debate) - so we talk about what I saw when I was there, and the conclusions I've come to.

Oahu: Byodo In Temple

Our second "sashimi" style show from Hawaii. Coming to you from the magnificent "Byodo In" Temple in the Valley of the Temples on Oahu.

This show's also coming to you raw and unedited (sorry for the wind noise) - from the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. Today we visit the Byodo In Temple which is located at the foot of the 2,000 foot Ko'olau Mountains in the Valley of the Temples.

The Temple was built in the 1960's to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant workers to Hawaii. It's a recreation of the 950-year-old Byodoin Templ in Uji, Japan.

The jewel of the temple is the golden "Lotus Buddha" (because he sits upon a lotus flower). This is the largest wooden Buddha carved in the last 900 years. It is decorated with gold leaf.
Like its sister in Japan, the main building is called the "Hoodo" or "Hall of the Chinese Phoenix." The floor plan models that of the Phoenix bird. Next to the Hoodo is a smaller bell-house which holds the 5-foot, 3-ton brass "peace bell." Ring it three times before entering the temple (and be sure to remove your shoes. Once you're inside, light a stick of incense (provided in front of the buddha), find a private corner then sit and meditate.

The Byodo-In Temple was used as a location in the first season of "Lost," (it was as the estate of Sun's father).
Address: 47-200 Kahekili Highway in the Valley of the Temples.

From Honolulu and Waikiki take the H1 West from downtown Honolulu. Exit onto the Likelike Highway and go north through the mountains and tunnel. Exit onto the Kahekili Highway (83) and continue north for about three miles. Turn left into the Valley of the Temples. The Byodo-In Temple is located in the back of the Valley of the Temples.

Oahu: Keaiwa Heiau

A "sashimi" style show from Hawaii. Coming to you from a 15th century healing temple called Keaiwa Heiau outside of Oahu.

Today's show comes to you raw and unedited - from the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. Today we visit a 15th century Hawaiian healing temple called Keaiwa Heiau.

Although it looks like a bunch of jumbled up lava rocks, the low-walled enclosure just outsiode the entrance to Keaiwa Heiau State Park is a Hawaiian temple from the 1400's. In ancient Hawaii, it a revered medical center and healing school. The resident Kahuna grew and prepared herbs used for treatment and prescriptions. The Kahuna treated the patients inside a pili-grass thatched house and made offerings to the gods.

Keaiwa Heiau: 99-1849 Aiea Heights Dr. (take H-1 west over Red Hill to Aiea Heights Drive), Aiea. Phone 808-587-0300.

Prague - Part 1: Vysehrad ENHANCED

The first of an ENHANCED series on, in, about and from, Prague.

Click here to see the ENHANCED podcast in a separate window

We start our ENHANCED series on Prague in a slightly haphazard fashion: we begin with a segment recorded at Vysehrad (the mystical heart of Prague) on my last day in the city. We talk about Vysehrad, Libuse (whose name I couldn't remember at the time), blue cosmic energy, pilgrimage, life's labyrinths and we finish with a snippet of a soundseeing tour as the bells of the Cathedral of Peter and Paul begin to chime.

Part one of a multi-part series. Future shows in this series will include Soundstews™*, the Prague Zodiac (recorded around Prague with Michal Maryška - INCREDIBLE!), and of course, the usual: history, myth, legend & spirit.

This ENHANCED podcast is in .AAC format and requires either iTunes, an iPod or QuickTime for playback. Not all iPods can display enhanced images and links. We're also posting a regular .mp3 version of this same audio.
